Prayer Through Fellowship

In church circles, prayer seems to be a common foundational element. Some will say prayer is communication with God, others say it’s a petition, still others will say it is an act of worship. I think all of those are pretty decent descriptions. But do we know Who we are communicating with, petitioning, and worshipping?

I don’t mean for this to sound cheesy or “super spiritual,” but I really want to pursue an honest, down to earth conversation about this. Can we really expect to have legitimate communication, petitioning, and worship with a God we don’t know? I really believe God desires fellowship and intimate knowledge to be reciprocated back to Him by each of His children. It’s all about Koinonia, real fellowship.
How do you get to know God?
What does spending time with God look like to you?
How do you fellowship with God?
Does it happen at a special location? Or can it happen anywhere and everywhere (home, work, Walmart, etc.)
What does fellowship really look like?
Once we answer those questions, then put prayer in the place of fellowship. When I did that, I began to see that the two, prayer and fellowship, actually go hand in hand. Prayer: communication, petitioning, and worshipping, actually flows out of fellowship with God. Neither is limited to a building, location, or church service. (Not that any of those things or places are bad.) God is not inside the box, He is the box, the air inside, and the expanse outside of the box. He encompasses everything.
The main point I want to drive home is that fellowship happens every day of the week, not just at a Sunday morning service or a prayer meeting. If God is calling you to a prayer service, or 24/7 prayer, those aren’t bad things, if He has called you to them. But just keep in perspective, that God is bigger still, and you don’t have to conform to someone else’s calling to find Him, nor should you conform someone else to your calling in order for them to find God.
Seek the Lord for yourself. Seek real fellowship with Him and then prayer will overflow from that pure fellowship. In our pursuit of truth, we can unlock Prayer through Fellowship.
